Which Quote of Margaret Sanger is Accurate?
By: Jeremy Mulvihill on October 23, 2018
These days It's difficult to know who to trust. I was doing some research on Margaret Sanger watching these 2 YouTube videos and I stumbled onto something curious. https://youtu.be/kEja-1emRic published 2008 watch from 5:43 & https://youtu.be/jswvL36w2-M published in 2017 watch from 2:39. There are 2 different quotes that originated from a LETTER FROM MARGARET SANGER TO DR. C.J. GAMBLE, DECEMBER 10, 1939. One quote the right uses and a second different quote the left uses. But which quote is correct. After further investigation, it appears the version the left used is the genuine quote because there is a copy of the letter (link to letter) but then you start to notice that web pages referring to the quote the right uses the links are broken (link to letter) and that the entire URL for smithlibraries.org is no longer active. When I first clicked on the link from my phone I got a warning that this URL was malicious. But couldn’t reproduce it on my computer. Was smithlibraries.org a fictitious URL used by someone in a malicious way to mislead people? libex.smith.edu (Smith College Libraries) sure seems to be a legitimate organization and URL. If you google "smithlibraries.org" including the quotations you get a list of web pages from https://libex.smith.edu with a reference to http://smithlibraries.org in the description so they are absolutely affiliated or are the same. Furthermore, the images extension is the exact same for both letters d6358bc3053c93183295bf2df1c0c931. So, which statement is true. It seems that broken links below were from 2015 with the "We should hire three or four colored ministers" vs the "The ministers work is also important and he should be trained" first showing up around Feb 11, 2017 on the YouTube video posted earlier. During my journey, I have been unsure of which to believe but more and more started leaning toward the version the left supports. I am no conspiracy theorist and was about to accept that it was a closed case but when I started learning that the smithlibraries.org was a legitimate URL the terrifying reality that this letter in fact could have been doctored and the original meaning changed. What does the original letter say? We don't know.

    The rights version:
We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. And the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.

You can see the link to the above file in these articles from back in 2015 are broken:

the lefts version: The ministers work is also important and also he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we that we want to exterminate the negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.
